The Frenship Heritage Middle School Band played its first note in August of 2011. Since then they have received Division one ratings at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest as well as other events they have participated it across the state. Some of the activities that the band participates in are:
- The band plays at all Pep Rallies
- Performs at the Frenship High School Band Night once a year at the High School Football games
- Performs multiple concerts for parents and the community throughout the year
- Travels to perform at Statewide competitions
- Performs at the Annual Picnic concert in the HMS lawn
In the Spring of 2013, the Heritage MS Band was the first group to take a major overnight trip to another city in the school's history.
The band does stay busy but we keep in mind that the students homework and studies in core classes come first and we coordinate with all Athletic and school activities. In fact, over 90% of our students are involved in Athletic activities and almost all of our students have multiple school extracurricular activities.
The band is currently under the direction of Mr. David Biel and Mr. AJ Pisani
Mr. David Biel - Director of Bands
Mr. Biel is in his 10th year of teaching and his seventh as the Director of Bands at Heritage Middle School. He is from South Texas and graduated from Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio, TX in 2003. He has an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Texas Tech University.
Originally a Bassoon player he also plays the Euphonium. Mr. Biel has enjoyed many experiences competing and performing throughout his musical career. While at Ronald Reagan High School, he performed at over 15 Regional, State, and National competitions, celebrating many division 1 titles as well as consistently ranking amongst the Bands of American Finalist bands. This includes a first place award at the 2001 Bands of America Houston competition and a finalist band at the 2002 Bands of America Grand National Competition in Indianapolis, IN.
While at Texas Tech, Mr. Biel performed in many ensembles across the country including the Texas Tech Goin’ Band from Raiderland. He was the President of the largest chapter of a National Honorary Band Service Fraternity in the country, Kappa Kappa Psi. He also served many positions in the band and in Kappa Kappa Psi.
After college, he was the Associate Director at Kingwood Park High School in Houston, TX. There he worked with many students in concert, marching, and middle school bands. In 2011, Mr. Biel conducted the Kingwood Park HS Second band and celebrated their first division 1 in the school’s history.
Mr. Biel just celebrated his fifth year of marriage and in his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with his wife, friends, and two dogs.
Mr. AJ Pisani - Associate Director
AJ Pisani is in his second year of teaching as the Associate Director of Bands for Heritage Middle School. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University, where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and Music Composition.
While studying at Texas Tech, Mr. Pisani was a mellophone player in the Goin’ Band from Raiderland and a saxophonist in many other ensembles. He also served as a member of the executive board for the TTU chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary Band Service Fraternity.
Mr. Pisani is originally from Houston and attended Kingwood Park High School.
Mr. Geoff Bissett - Director Emeritus
In the summer of 2013 Mr. Geoff Bissett, the school's first Associate Director, retired after 17 years at Frenship ISD and over 40 years in music. We are proud to be the school that Mr. Bissett ended his long and successful teaching career.
In the Spring of 2013, Mr. Bissett was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or "ALS" (also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease"). If you would like to learn more about ALS, or if you would like to donate to find a cure, see the ALS Associations Website here.
In November of 2015, Mr. Bissett moved on from this world to conduct a band in the sky. He is survived by a loving family and thousands of students. We will miss him.
